Huawei’s Multi-Folding Mate XT Goes Global

When word broke back in September of 2024 that Huawei was launching this insane piece of tech, the internet basically melted down. My reaction video hit nearly 100K views which is particularly impressive given how little I cover Huawei. It was clear from the buzz alone that this would be an important device - even Samsung appears set to respond.

Now it seems the pressure to respond will be even greater as Huawei is launching their 10.2-inch doubled-hinged phone globally, allowing it to leave China for the first time. Announced at an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia they are launching the phone with at €3,499 with 16GB/1TB variant. This global variant features the same large inner screen paired with a 6.4-inch cover display which is actually just a part of the UTG display that’s left uncovered when the accordion like device is closed.

This device is even thinner than the book style foldables we’ve seen fighting over that thinness crown at an insane 3.6mm when opened and a svelte 12.8mm when closed. Even at that thickness, they’ve packed in a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide with 5.5x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide and a 5,600mAh battery that supports 66w charging. Truly impressive tech.

One caveat is that Huawei has recently replaced the Android their devices typically ran with their own EMUI 14 OS which means no easy access to the Play Store.

At this event, Huawei did not confirm which regions outside Malaysia the Mate XT would be launching in, but they did confirm the The Verge that it would not be arriving in the US or UK for the time being. Still, importing might be a bit easier now.
